Moreno"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-25\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/Foto-estudio-Dic-20103-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ana I.<\/strong> Moreno received a PhD. in English Philology from the University of Le\u00f3n in 1995, her doctoral thesis being supervised by Dr. John Hyde (Universidad de Salamanca).\u00a0She also holds a Diploma in Teacher Training in Spanish and English from the University of Le\u00f3n (Spain, 1986) and a B.A. in English Philology from the University of Salamanca (Spain,\u00a01990). She got tenure at the Departamento de Filolog\u00eda Moderna (Universidad de Le\u00f3n) in 1996.\u00a0In 2007-2009, she was a researcher at Madrid\u2019s Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales (CCHS), a part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). She is back at the University of Le\u00f3n, where she is\u00a0a tenured senior lecturer and the Director of the ENEIDA research group (the Spanish Team for Intercultural Studies on Academic Discourse).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">At the University of Le\u00f3n, she has lectured in English Grammar, English Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics and English\u00a0for Specific Purposes in <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/P42500725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-129\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/P42500725-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"137\" \/><\/a>the\u00a0degree in English Philology. She has also taught practical undergraduate courses in English for Agriculture, General Business English, English for Specific Business Purposes, and General English and English for General Academic Purposes at various levels in various degrees at the university.\u00a0She is\u00a0currently responsible for the course in Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers within the Masters\u2019 degree in Teacher Training (for teachers at secondary schools, official schools of languages and vocational training schools). Her teaching\u00a0 has also included various doctoral courses in\u00a0Cohesion in English and in Research methods in English-Spanish cross-cultural studies within the Quality Doctoral Programme in Intercultural Studies and Translation offered by the\u00a0Departamento de Filolog\u00eda Moderna\u00a0at this university. Ana\u00a0Moreno has\u00a0supervised \u00a0Lorena Su\u00e1rez&#8217; doctoral thesis (2005) and various doctoral research projects and master&#8217;s dissertations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/P52000031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-119\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/P52000031-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"135\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0The last five editions of the doctoral course in Research Methods in English\/Spanish Crosscultural Studies, which\u00a0Ana Moreno\u00a0coordinated,\u00a0were in collaboration with Ulla Connor, Professor in Intercultural Communication at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. As a result of this collaboration, Ulla Connor and Ana Moreno have\u00a0co-authored\u00a0a book chapter on tertium comparationis published\u00a0in 2005 in honor of Robert B. Kaplan. Their collaboration\u00a0for the design of a set\u00a0of general principles for conducting research studies to\u00a0be applied to Intercultural Rhetoric\u00a0has also been reflected in a recent book by Connor (2011). <em>Intercultural Rhetoric in the Writing Classroom<\/em>.\u00a0Michigan series on teaching multiligual writers. Including\u00a0conference paper presentations, she has participated in 38 research conferences or\u00a0workshops, 19 national and 19 international. In\u00a02001 she was the coordinator of the successful 21st AESLA\u00a0(Spanish Association for Applied Linguistics) Conference.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/AESLA-clausura-2001-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/ESP-MATCHING1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ana Moreno has\u00a0carried out various\u00a0needs analyses for teaching English (for General Purposes, for Business Purposes,<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/IJES-Role-of-cohesion.jpg\"><\/a> for General Academic Purposes and for Research Publication Purposes) and\u00a0has made contributions\u00a0to theories of\u00a0writing instruction and reading comprehension, as well as to\u00a0the field of\u00a0contrastive\u00a0rhetoric, a key field of study in second\/foreign language acquisition\/learning.\u00a0Most of\u00a0her\u00a0work has aimed to give an intercultural (Spanish\/English) perspective on\u00a0scientific and academic discourse with a view to improving\u00a0the teaching\/learning of\u00a0English for academic purposes by bringing in Spanish\/English crosscultural information about academic writing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Based on the premise that academic writing practices and outcomes are also strongly affected<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/Importance-comparable-corpora1.jpg\"><\/a> by socioculturally-shaped and embeded\u00a0expectations and teaching practices,\u00a0she has developed rigorous\u00a0and systematic\u00a0methods to empirically\u00a0uncover recurrent differences (and similarities) in the rhetorical organization and the stylistic preferences shown by scholars writing in English and in Spanish (as L1s) for academic purposes. As an applied linguist,\u00a0she\u00a0has\u00a0drawn on multiple theoretical frameworks to address her research concerns:\u00a0general communication theories,\u00a0pragmatics, discourse and genre analytical frameworks, functional linguistics, as well as theories of\u00a0language teaching and learning. She has also\u00a0used\u00a0corpus linguistics\u00a0techniques (paying\u00a0special attention\u00a0to the compilation of comparable\u00a0Spanish\/English academic corpora) and ethnographically-oriented methods. Her\u00a0work has mainly\u00a0focussed on cohesion and coherence, metadiscourse, evaluation in discourse and rhetorical structure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/Framework-for-comparing1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Her publications in\u00a0the field of contrastive\u00a0rhetoric have\u00a0appeared in such journals as <em>Text<\/em>, <em>English for Specific Purposes<\/em>, <em>International Journal of English Studies<\/em>, <em>Journal of English for Academic Purposes and <\/em><em>Text&amp;Talk, <\/em>as well as in specialised collective volumes on applied linguistics, contrastive rhetoric, interpersonality in academic discourse, academic evaluation, criticism in scholarly writing, and English for professional and academic purposes. Her research results in this\u00a0field have implications for those teaching academic writing or anyone writing, working with, or translating academic English and Spanish texts (L1\/L2). <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/Giving-reasons.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Having shown differences in various aspects of rhetoric and style across various Spanish and English comparable academic writing cultures,\u00a0Ana Moreno\u00a0is now seeking to determine the most typical writing problems that prevent Spanish researchers from getting their research articles accepted for publication in international scientific journals (see Moreno 2010). This will allow her future studies to focus on real and relevant textual problems that Spanish scholars tend to have when writing in English for an international audience. One of her aims is\u00a0to\u00a0establish which of the revisions\u00a0that Spanish academic writers\u00a0need to make in order for their texts to be successful across cultures may be explained in terms of the Contrastive Rhetoric Hypothesis so\u00a0that\u00a0relevant crosscultural results may be brought into practical teaching applications specifically designed for them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.unileon.es\/amoreno\/files\/2011\/08\/Visibility-and-invisibility-markers.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">By paying greater attention to the sociocultural and educational practices leading to\u00a0differences in scholars\u2019 writing practices and outcomes across cultures, her research is steadily moving towards Intercultural Rhetoric. As she\u00a0explains in her entry for <em>The Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics <\/em>(Moreno forthcoming, 2012),\u00a0Intercultural Rhetoric (IR) is a research field that seeks to identify and explain some of the rhetorical and stylistic accommodations that multilingual writers need to make in order to achieve their communication goals interculturally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Ana Moreno\u00a0has participated in various research projects and is a member of a number of research groups.\u00a0She\u00a0has served on the editorial board of <em>Ling\u00fc\u00edstica y Lenguas Aplicadas <\/em>and still serves on the editorial board of <em>IBERICA<\/em>, a major journal in Languages for Specific purposes. She has also\u00a0reviewed research articles for other major journals in applied linguistics, including <em>English for Specific Purposes<\/em>, <em>Journal of English for Academic Purposes<\/em>, and <em>TextandTalk<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Ana I.
